White vs. black files: white files are made of aluminum oxide, softer, more flexible, and more durable. Their rounded abrasive particles with stearate coating prevent clogging and are ideal for dry filing. Black files are made of silicon carbide, harder and more brittle, with sharp abrasive particles that self-sharpen during work. They perform better for wet filing but clog faster and lack protective coating.
